KeyCDN Launches New POP in Austria
Here at KeyCDN, we've got lots of exciting things planned for 2018. From performance to security and everything in between, we're always looking to improve our platform to better serve both our customers and your visitors. That's why today we'd like to announce that we've just launched a new point of presence (POP) in Vienna, Austria! The new POP is in production and has been automatically added to all existing Zones.
POP in Vienna extends content delivery to Austria
With the introduction of a POP in Vienna, our presence in Europe becomes even stronger and more performant. With Vienna being the largest city and the capital of Austria, it makes for a great edge server location.
Before the implementation of our Vienna POP, Austrian users were delivered content from our surrounding POPs. However, with the Vienna edge server now live, this helps bridge the gap between nearby POPs including Frankfurt, Milano, Warsaw, and Istanbul.
As of 2016, Vienna alone had a population of over 1.8 million people (2.6 million within the metropolitan area - nearly one third of Austria's population), and covers an area of just 414 square kilometers. As for Austria in general, it is located in central Europe, covers a total area of 83,879 square kilometers and has a population of over 8.7 million.
Growth of Internet in Austria
Austria's Internet penetration rate is already quite high. A large boost in the adoption of Internet was experienced between the years 2004-2009 and as of 2016, the penetration rate was at 81.9%. Therefore, over 7.1 million people are Internet users.
Ecommerce is also quite prevalent in Austria. Over half of their Internet users shop online and the average spend per online shopper in 2015 was €1,759. Furthermore, the B2C ecommerce turnover represented €7.5bn in 2015 and the total share of ecommerce in retail was 9.3%. According to Statista, ecommerce revenue in Austria is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 7.6%.
Here are some additional statistics about the usage and growth of the Internet in Austria.
- The number of mobile phone subscriptions in 2016 was 14.27 million.
- There are 37 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Austria.
- Typical speeds are up to 30 Mbit/s download and 5 Mbit/s upload over DSL and up to 250 Mbit/s download and 25 Mbit/s upload over cable.
How to check if content is delivered from Austria
Each POP adds the HTTP response header X-Edge-Location
to all assets delivered via KeyCDN. In this case, the Vienna POP's identifier is atvi
. The first two letters stand for the country TLD, while the 3rd and 4th letters are for the city. You can quickly check the response headers using Chrome DevTools, a speed test tool, or a simple curl command like the one below:
curl -I https://www.keycdn.com/img/example.jpg
HTTP/2 200
