KeyCDN Launches New POP in Canada
KeyCDN is dedicated to expansion throughout the globe and we are excited to announce our new point of presence (POP) in Montreal, Canada! This is our first POP in Canada and your visitors in that location should immediately see a dramatic improvement in latency and throughput. The new POP is now in production and has been automatically added to all existing Zones.
POP in Montreal extends content delivery to Canada
KeyCDN is dedicated to providing a strong presence throughout the globe and this new POP in Canada will be our 25th location, our 2nd location added in 2016. We are excited for this expansion into Canada as it is one region we have not been able to reach yet. The POP is located in a premium SSAE 16 compliant data center in Montreal, Canada, just 200 kilometers from the capital, Ottawa. This is a very large hub for internet connectivity.
Our POP in Seattle, WA does cover a lot of traffic for those living in the south-western provinces, but as you can see in the image below, the population density in Canada is much higher around Montreal, and the south-eastern provinces.
If we take a look at the top 5 largest cities, Toronto and Montreal are more than 3x the size of Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton combined. (Population data is from the 2014 census and is the latest available as of January 26th, 2016)
City | Population | Population Density | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Toronto | 6,055,724 | 1,025.4 inh./km² |
2 | Montreal | 4,027,121 | 945.7 inh./km² |
3 | Vancouver | 2,470,289 | 857 inh./km² |
4 | Calgary | 1,406,721 | 275.4 inh./km² |
5 | Edmonton | 1,328,290 | 140.9 inh./km² |
Testing performance in Canada
We have just made some big improvements to our Ping Test tool, Traceroute tool, and Website Speed Test this week. We added 4 additional locations, Seattle, Toronto, Miami and Sao Paulo (14 in total). You can now run tests from Toronto to better test performance of your site in Canada. On our test site (hosted in Dallas, TX) ping times to Toronto are now under 40 ms!

How to check if content is delivered from Montreal
Each POP adds the HTTP header X-Edge-Location
to assets that are delivered. In this case, it will be camo
. The first two letters stand for the country TLD, the 3rd and 4th letter for the city. You can quickly check using Chrome DevTools or KeyCDN's Website Speed Test tool.
