KeyCDN Launches New POP in Norway
Here at KeyCDN, our network continues to grow! We're always looking for ways to improve our infrastructure and build a better global CDN service. That's why today we'd like to announce that we've just launched a new point of presence (POP) in Oslo, Norway! The new POP is in production and has been automatically added to all existing Zones.
POP in Oslo extends content delivery to Norway
With the introduction of a POP in Oslo, our presence in Europe becomes even stronger and more performant. With Oslo being the capital as well as the most populous city in Norway, it makes for a great edge server location.
Before the implementation of our Oslo POP, Norwegian users were delivered content from our Stockholm POP. However, with the Oslo edge server now live, this helps further accelerate content delivery to users in Norway as well as improves presence in general within the Scandinavian regions.
As of 2016, Oslo alone had a population of over 650,000 people and covers an area of just 130 square kilometers. As for Norway, it is located in western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula, covers an area of over 385,000 square kilometers and has a population of over 5.2 million people.
Growth of Internet in Norway
Norway's Internet penetration rate has grown extremely fast over the past two decades. During 1997, the Internet penetration rate was only 13%. However, as of 2016 Internet usage has been adopted dramatically and the most current statistics show a 98% Internet penetration rate. This is close to the entire population (almost 5.2 million people) being internet users.
Ecommerce also accounts for a significant portion of Internet usage in Norway and surrounding Scandinavian countries. In fact, according to Ecommercenews, Nordic ecommerce (which includes Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden) accounted for 20.6 billion Euros in ecommerce revenue. This is an important aspect to consider when running an online shop either in Europe or worldwide. A major factor in increasing website conversions is website speed, thus the faster your website can deliver content, the more likely visitors are to convert.
Here are some additional statistics about the usage and growth of Internet in Norway:
- About 36 percent of Nordic consumers said they made one or more purchases with their phone in 2017.
- Both download and upload speeds continue to increase. As of February 2018, the average fixed broadband speeds were 79.20 Mbps, ranking Norway 14th in the world.
- 80 percent of leading retailers in the Nordics have an ecommerce app and a mobile-optimized ecommerce website. Therefore, visitors are used to visiting optimized mobile sites.
How to check if content is delivered from Norway
Each POP adds the HTTP response header X-Edge-Location
to all assets delivered via KeyCDN. In this case, the Oslo POP's identifier is noos
. The first two letters stand for the country TLD, while the 3rd and 4th letters are for the city. You can quickly check the response headers using Chrome DevTools, a speed test tool, or a simple curl command like the one below:
curl -I https://www.keycdn.com/img/example.jpg
